Jamaludin Jalil

Jamal began his training under Goh Soo Khim (current Artistic Director of Singapore Dance Theatre) in 1981. After attaining his Law degree from NUS (1986), he embarked upon his professional dance career with The Singapore Dance Theatre in 1988.
His roles has included solo and leading parts in the company’s various performances and was chosen to represent the company in its collaboration with the Hong Kong Ballet for the 1992 Singapore Arts Festival. In 1992, he was also awarded the Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council. He then chose to further his training by pursuing a Masters in Fine Arts (Dance) at the prestigious New York University in 1994, on a Shell/NAC Scholarship. Upon graduation in 1996, he was talent spotted and joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, one of the top 3 ballet companies in Canada.

He returned to the Singapore Dance Theatre and was appointed Assistant Ballet Master as well as continuing to be a performing artist with the company. He has choreographed while in New York and continued to choreograph pieces for the Singapore Dance Theatre which has been brought on tour by the company. Jamal’s performing career has brought him to countries like China, Taiwan, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, USA and Europe.
He was Executive Director with I Dance Central Ltd from 2004-2006 and was also a part-time lecturer with both Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. He sits on various advisory committees of the NAC as a Resource member for Dance (Arts Festival, Scholarships and Bursaries, Cultural Medallion and Young Artist Awards, Annual Grants and Arts Research and Development).
Jamal has also written reviews and articles for The Straits Times, The Arts Magazine as well as other publications. He was a regular contributor for Dance Europe and reviews dance regularly.
Jamal was a full-time Senior Lecturer with the Department of Dance at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (2006-2016)
